Important results from the project

The goal was to create an MVP for automatic weighing of pigs using camera and artificial intelligence and present to the Swedish and global market. The result is the product Pig Scale weighing with a precision of + -2kg. This is a unique technological breakthrough! Swedish collaboration innovation at its best has yielded results much thanks to Vinnova´s support.

Expected long term effects

Automatic weighing means that the producer saves resources and can increase profitability. Monitoring gives an indication if the pig is growing according to the estimated curve. If not, correct measures can be taken early. If the reason, for example, is a medical condition antibiotic can be avoided. The producer saves money and we, the consumers, avoid antibiotics in the bacon. For the pig, life becomes easier as stress is eliminated when weighing is automated. It is completely unaware of the camera that is in the ceiling of the box.

Approach and implementation

We have filled the image bank with 3.5 million images of different breeds. The image material has been used to train the system, so-called machine learning. This has resulted in a significantly improved algorithm. Had the world situation looked different, we would have liked to have seen more test farms. But Covid-19 has inhibited both business making and travel. We have adapted and tested the equipment to withstand the harsh environment in the stable with high ammonia levels, sulfur, humidity, etc.
