Important results from the project
The main objective of AQUO was to provide policy makers with practical solutions and guidelines to reduce underwater shipping noise for a quieter ocean, in order to protect marine life.
Expected long term effects
Possible future regulation regarding underwater noise in sensitive areas will promote: -The improvement of design of future vessels -The operation of existing vessels in a silent configuration -The management of ship traffic with the objective of the protection of marine life to underwater sound
Approach and implementation
Relevant methods and tools, are used to assess the effectiveness of noise mitigation measures in order to select the most appropriate: -Noise footprint assessment (WP1) -Bio-acoustic studies to derive criteria for shipping underwater noise limits (WP4) -Computer methods and scale model experiments to predict radiated noise from ships (WP2) -Validation by full scale measuremants at sea (WP3)
