Reference number
Coordinator Luleå tekniska universitet - Institutionen för teknikvetenskap och matematik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration December 2012 - June 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project was to, within the general idea of the SKF University Technology Centre (UTC) at Luleå University, formulate and write an application for additional funding from Vinnova that can extend the research conducted within the UTC and also further facilitate the ability for companies other than SKF to take part of and be involved in the research. The goal is considered to be achieved since an application for additional funding is ready to be submitted.

Results and expected effects

The result of the project is an application for additional funding for the research area ´smart machines´. Additional funding will give Swedish industry an improved position in the field of condition monitoring of machines which also are connected to the internet. Smart machines themselves can monitor their machine components´ interface between stationary and moving parts which can in turn lead to better utilization of raw materials and energy, and new beneficial business models that can give the industry market advantages.

Approach and implementation

The work to write the application was carried out at three different departments and institutions at Luleå University of Technology, Division of Machine Elements (TVM), EISLAB (SRT) and the Operation, Maintenance and Acoustics (SBN). Staff from SKF has also taken part in preparation of the application. There was also a dialogue with several companies, such as The Swedish Transport Administration who has just launched a pilot project in conjunction with SKF about smart bearings in rail way locomotives which is in line with what is included in the application.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
