Smart mini factories for pharmaceutical production

Reference number
Coordinator Lunds universitet - Institutionen för kemiteknik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 215 000
Project duration April 2016 - December 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project will focus on demonstrating innovative technologies and methods for small-scale continuous and automated production of biopharmaceuticals. That means new processing technologies, ie new process solutions of the physical plant, and new automation and production management, ie new cyber technologies of the virtual factory for decision makers. New technology and innovation have to be adapted to these very different needs, from very small with very little specific production knowledge to the production system of a relatively well-specified product.

Expected results and effects

The demonstrator has been developed successfully and has completed proof-of-concept in a realistic industrial case study. The technical solution to make an implementation of an external master control system, orbit, has proven very useful and has generated several new solutions. The demonstrator has already proved useful in the development of related process steps. This will provide rapid effects of the operators who have been active in the project

Planned approach and implementation

The demonstrator consists of two parts; the physical mini factory and the digital part. The development has taken place in three stages. The first was to put all the pieces together into a complete system with the implementation of a first version of the software. The further development were done in connection with the study of two case studies. Case Study 1 is a simplified separation problems with four sub-steps. Case study 2 is a realistic industrial case study from Sobi.
