Important results from the project
The aim of the present project was to suggest a cost effective methodology that will lead to enhanced mechanical performance of single lap joints. Different techniques for surface preparation were tested, with respect to lower cost, improved mechanical performance and therefore increased competitiveness for the respective SME.
Expected long term effects
The technique showed great potential, due to the big time savings, the reduction of scrap material and the reduction of the environmental contamination. However, it is suggested that future studies fine tune the form of peel plies and their surface treatment so that the mechanical performance would be enhanced. Nordic Aircraft benefited from this study, as it was proven that a significant reduction of operational cost is possible. Therefore Nordic Aircraft can offer a more competitive product, both performance wise and cost wise.
Approach and implementation
In order to achieve the defined target, five commercially available peel ply fabrics were tested. Respective joints were manufactured and their performance was evaluated by monotonous tensile testing. The results were compared to joints manufactured with classic techniques. Fracture analysis was performed on every case study. Finally, a testing methodology was designed to evaluate the adhesion of each peel ply fabric into the laminates.
