Purpose and goal

SIL Open Data is an innovation project with the purpose of investigating and trying out solutions for making data in SIL (the Swedish Information database of medical drugs) available as open data. The project began in december 2013 and was completed in may 2014. The goals of the project were to deliver a working alfa release of an HTTP API that is available to the public and which provides access to data in SIL and a web site with information on the HTTP API. The goals of the project have been achieved.

Results and expected effects

We hope that the delivered alfa release of the HTTP API will be used by and stimulate innovative software companies who want to develop new eHealth-solutions in the form of web- and mobile applications where there is need of information on medical drugs in Sweden. We also hope that users, who are not developers, will be able to use the API to get and use the information. Our intent and hope is that the service will be seen as easy to understand and use.

Approach and implementation

The project was undertaken in three main phases. A planning phase, a main phase consisting of a number of iterative development steps and a final documentation phase. The project was 3 weeks late compared to the original plan, depending on the fact that involved project members had to commit time to other job responsabilities. Apart from that the original project plan was followed and the goals of the project where reached.
