Safe & Green Innovative Bus Rapid Transport for China

Reference number
Coordinator Volvo Technology AB - Avd 6010 M1.6
Funding from Vinnova SEK 750 000
Project duration November 2012 - September 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project has been to increase the understanding of current BRT operation in China, compare with BRT operation in Sweden and develop eco-innovative concepts for potential future projects. Then identify opportunities for cross learning and develop innovative SINO-BRT concepts to be explored in potential future projects. Overall the project delivered on its purpuses and objectives, see full report.

Results and expected effects

The project has delivered expected results in two workshops organised in China and Sweden respectively. A final report has been aggregated. There is a base for future projects to increase efficiency, safety and availability of future BRT systems in China. In addition there are opportunities for Swedish industry to develop innovative solutions as part of system deliveries. Challenges will be to setup projects involving local authorities, bus operators and meet local system and bus competition in China. There are available research platforms to build on, like MISTRA and CTS.

Approach and implementation

The project setup with Chinese and Swedish partners was enough to perform the project in a good enough way. There is yet a need to further develop and strengthen the collaboration with Chinese actors, especially related to authorities and operators for future projects. The project built on the existing research platform MISTRA and the collaboration agreement between Chalmers and Tongji University in Shanghai. The new China-Sweden center for traffic safety (CTS) could also be used in future projects. The EU-China collaboration on Urbanisation is also an opportunity (Horizon 2020).
