Venture Challenge-Driven Innovation – Stage 1 initiation

Purpose and goal

The project goal is to develop robust source separating systems for food and toilet waste. The solutions which will be developed aim to increase the reuse of nutrients to agriculture, decrease water consumption, increase energy efficiency and decrease pollution load on recipients. During step 1 of the project the constellation of project partners and the idea has developed, challenges in constructing robust source separating systems have been identified and plans have been made for how these solutions will be developed in step 2.

Results and expected effects

Further organizations, in form of manufacturers, consultants, municipalities and trade organization, have been associated to the project as intended project partners for step 2. An application for continued funding in step 2 is planned together with the organizations from UDI-project ´Mat i kretslopp´.

Approach and implementation

The project partners during step 1 have been Mälarenergi, VA SYD, Lunds University, SP, Sweco and JTI (coordinator). The project has run from june 2015 to jan 2016 and has entailed exchange of knowledge and experiences between project partners and other companies and institutions, through meetings, phone contacts and e-mail contacts. Source separating systems which are under planning and construction in Västerås and Malmö have been in focus, but development going on in other locations in Sweden and internationally have also been discussed.
