Coordinator VETENSKAP & ALLMÄNHET, VA - Vetenskap & Allmänhet VA
Funding from Vinnova SEK 120 000
Project duration April 2014 - December 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of Researchers´ Grand Prix is to encourage researchers to engage in dialogue with society, increase public interest in research and the research profession, highlight to stakeholders the importance of scientists communicating their work and ultimately promote more public engagement activity. The contest also aims to raise the profile and status of science communication and showcase the breadth of Swedish research. Evaluation and media coverage suggest the aims and objectives have been met.

Results and expected effects

The final and regional heats were evaluated by questionnaires. 98% of the audience found the presentations easy to understand. 31% had a more positive attitude to researchers afterwards. 54% of contestants said they were now more willing to engage with the public. In 2014 Researchers´ Grand Prix got at least 78 media mentions. The final was broadcast on Kunskapskanalen and is available on UR Play. The contest got broad coverage in Sweden, both through the media and the location of the regional heats.

Approach and implementation

Contestants received coaching and a jury gave constructive feedback on the presentations based on their expertise (performing arts, storytelling, scientific content). So all participants received presentation skills guidance. The 2014 concept was modified in response to previous evaluations. Presentations were increased from 3 to 4 minutes. Each researcher gave a brief recap prior to the voting. The audience´s and jury´s votes combined determined the winner, meaning everyone was involved.
