Important results from the project
The goal of the project was to further develop and verify a circular model for the remanufacturing of complex cast components by casting new functional layers. The goal can be considered reached as a number of concepts have been tried where different materials have been cast together to repair a component or cast on a functional layer. This has been done with as well as without extra input of heat via induction. It has been shown to be possible, and although more work is required to verify how the properties of the component are affected, interesting results have been achieved.
Expected long term effects
As a result, casting as a circular model for the remanufacturing of complex cast components has shown promise. The next step is to identify suitable products where remanufacturing creates added value, and create a stable method for the transition zone of the material combination in question. The project has led to an increased interest in identifying suitable cases where compound casting can be a successful concept. The workshops that have been held have generated activities that have been started and aimed at improving the processes with regard to sustainability.
Approach and implementation
The project has worked with two main areas, one based on practical experiments to cast on new functional surfaces and develop technology to create metallurgical bonding in the transition zone. The second area has been about sustainability and circularity. Both of these areas have led to interesting results. Casting has been carried out through experimental work where different concepts have been tested on geometries developed for the purpose as well as on real components. The second area has mainly been implemented through sustainability analysis and two workshops at the companies.
