Purpose and goal

The mapping of medical devices companies engaged in research and development in Sweden is important for Swedish Medtech and other organizations working to improve conditions for research, development and innovation. The survey is a follow-up on studies conducted by Swedish Medtech and VINNOVA 2010/2011 and 2013. The follow-up presents an opportunity to follow trends and the development of the companies. The project was a collaboration between Swedish Medtech and the department of Industrial Engineering at Uppsala University.

Results and expected effects

The mapping reveals perceived conditions and challenges for research and development for the medical device industry in Sweden. The results will be used to promote the medical industry, by forming the basis for proposals for concrete initiatives to politicians, authorities and other organizations to create the conditions for the medical device companies in Sweden. Furthermore, the results indicate trends in medical device companies with research and development in Sweden.

Approach and implementation

An electronic survey was sent to all companies in the sample group. A relatively low response rate was achieved, but the number of respondents, and the spread of the respondents regarding company size, geographic origin and product type, can be considered sufficient to make a qualitative analysis and that the results are representative of the target audience. The report will be made available and presented. Another research report will be compiled by researchers at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Uppsala.
