Rapid and low cost manufacturing of high performance composite components, Phase 2

Reference number
Coordinator GKN AEROSPACE SWEDEN AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 5 000 000
Project duration December 2012 - March 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The overall purpouse of the ´Triple Use´ project has been to achive knowledge transfer and use of results in military and civil aerospace applications as well as automotive. The technical approach is to combine the long experience from composit manufacturing and applications in aerospace with the knowledge and mindset about efficient manufacturing from the automotive industry. The goals has been to develop a number of technologies that contributes to faster and more cost effective manufacturing of composit components for application in the diffetent kinds of products.

Results and expected effects

The results are in the form of demonstated methods for how to make the manufacturing of structural components faster and cheaper. Alternative materials and manufacturing mehods has been studied and tested in combination with studies of how different solutions for automation can be used for low volume manufacturing in aerospace industy. The project has deliverd results for process and automation technologies which will improve e.g. cycle times and cost. For VCC the results has also identified and confirmed design, materials and manufacturing solutions suitable for body components.

Approach and implementation

The main part of the work has been organized in 3 work packages (WPs), one for each of: aero engines, aero structures and passanger cars. The work in ´phase 2´ has followed the earlier planned direction, to further develop the technologies and identifying components to be demonstrated in ´phase 3´. Exept from some minor changes and re-scheduling, the work has been done according to plan. A separate WP has been project management and coordination of common workshops to stimulate knowledge sharing. That plan has worked well and the results has met or even exceded the expectations.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
