Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project QuickTag was to follow the implementation of a mobile industry application and study the effects, problems and attitudes in a real environment, and to build a consortium for a larger project. The study identified clear beneficial effects but also a number of challenges and pitfalls that could be worked out with extended functionality or a changed approach. Several industries have shown great interest in participating in a follow-up project.

Expected results and effects

The mobile application QuickTag, which is a result of a larger research project: The Operator of the Future, was made possible to test in a real environment with good results. The profitability was considered good. Boliden Aitik has therefore taken the decision to deploy the application as a new tool for all operators in the enrichment plant during the year 2016. The expected impact is more committed employees and better monitoring and control of problems and therefore better possibilities to prevent future problems and reduce downtime costs.

Planned approach and implementation

The implementation of the mobile application QuickTag at Boliden Aitik, and the minor user test (10 operators) have been followed and evaluated in the form of dialog, interviews and questionnaires. Seven different themes have been focused: efficiency, costs, problems, control versus support, usability, improvements and information sorting. 10 interviews were conducted with system developers, job requestor (management) and users from different areas and levels of responsibility.
