Important results from the project
The aim of the Project was to test the hypothesis that addition of Quartzene in a paint can provide an improved fire protection of Wood. We reached the highest possible fire protection class possible for Wood according to ISO 5660 which is Euroclass B. We have thus proven that the hypothesis is correct.
Expected long term effects
Addition of Quartzene to a paint applied on Wood gives in some cases the highest fire protection class. We still need to develop a paint which can meet all requirements of a coating such as durability, stability in can and paintability.
Approach and implementation
We mixed 2 Product classes of Quartzene with various binders.More than 50 formulation were evaluated and many of them were unstable and not mixable. The most promising formulations were applied on Wood. Some of these formulations did not meet the requirements at this stage and we continued to paint with the other formulations. These coatings were fire tested and we want to further develop the formulations that reached the highest fire class Euroclass B so that they also meet all other requirements on a coating so that it can be a new coating available on the market.
