Purpose and goal

The Quality Innovation of the Year Competition is an annual, international competition. Its purpose is to increase the amount and level of innovations with focus on processes and business models . The competition started as a national competition of Finland but has since then been expanded to several european countries, where the Swedish Institute for Quality - SIQ has the responsibility for the Swedish prize. The competition enables organizations to benchmark their innovation at the national and international level and receive professional feedback from an independent jury.

Results and expected effects

Benefits of participating in Quality Innovation of the Year are: raising public awareness of your innovation, help opening new markets, national and international recognition. For the 2015 national prize, 3 Swedish were recognised: Halmstads Fastighets AB, Landstinget Västmanland and Volvo Car Customer Service. In the competition a total of 218 innovations participated 2015. Of these 14 were recognised at the International Ceremony 27/01 in Tallinn. 2 of the Swedish national winners, also received the international prize; Landstinget Västmanland & Volvo Car Customer Service.

Approach and implementation

Hundreds of innovators from various countries apply annually to this international competition for a neutral evaluation and recognition of their innovation. The applications are carefully evaluated by experienced assessors in each country. The innovations are evaluated based on innovation assessment framework and graded on five areas: novelty value, usability, learning, customer orientation and effectiveness. National juries decide the national best innovations in each series and the winners of each national competition are also then evaluated by an international jury.
