Reference number
Coordinator Mimerse AB - Mimerse
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration October 2014 - August 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose was to develop a software application which utilizes virtual reality to treat common phobias. The project involved clinical testing of the software through a pilot RCT-study at Stockholm University. Goals included having developed the software application together with a growing user base consisting of clinicians, their patients, and others. A completed project will allow further business and product development. The project has to a large extent been highly successful, although delayed slightly.

Results and expected effects

The result of the project is Mimerse ABs first product: a software application for automatically treating spider phobias. Mimerse AB, and the resulting product, has become well-known among practicing behavioral psychologists and other clinicians working in Sweden and abroad. The project is expected to positively affect society when it is launched by providing a more readily available method of therapy for the most common anxiety disorders.

Approach and implementation

After the purchase of necessary computers and hardware the development process begun, primarily consisting of programming, development and testing in accordance with ´agile development´ practices. Throughout the software development process carefully selected beta testers provided feedback regarding the product. The final stage of the project is release of the software to public and to carry through a clinical pilot study at Stockholm University. This is expected to be accomplished during the fall of 2015.
