Purpose and goal

The aim of this research and development initiative is to advance our knowledge of the management and organization of hospital projects as an arena for the formation and development of technological and organizational innovations. The ambition is to develop a better understanding of how project innovation may contribute to innovation in the Swedish healthcare systems. Moreover, this initiative seeks to identify best practices among the most important hospital projects recently implemented in the Swedish healthcare system.

Expected results and effects

We hope to improve the general understanding of the management and organization of hospital projects, and how these projects may be organized to facilitate innovation in the healthcare system. We will identify best practices across the selected projects. The results from the project will be presented in an Innovation Handbook, and a white paper comparing the selected projects, and two practitioner-oriented papers highlighting the major practical implications.

Planned approach and implementation

The focus is on identifying examples of successful and less successful implementation of new technology in and through hospital projects. The initiative is carried out in partnership with several key stakeholders, including county representatives, construction firms, and architects. We adopt a multiple case-study logic and make use of the literature on institutional complexity to develop our analysis.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
