Plattform for direct manufacturing of microcomponents

Reference number
Coordinator Swerea IVF AB - Swerea IVF Göteborg
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 000 000
Project duration November 2011 - November 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Our objective with this project was to construct a scalable generic platform for direct manufacturing of functional microsystems. According to our concept the complete system including packaging is produced with the same platform. Functional materials and channels encapsulated. The combination of generic and scalable platform means that the time and cost to develop the prototype to start large-scale production is reduced compared to existing production technology. Additive manufacturing can offer significant reductions in energy consumption and emissions.

Results and expected effects

We have developed a platform for additive manufacturing of functional 3D micro components. The technology is potentially possible to scale up to mass production. It is possible to combine different materials in the same component and built in functionality. By using suspensions of fine grained powder it is possible to manufacture components with high surface finish and high tolerances that reduces the need for machining to reach final shape and tolerances. The platform has a potential to serve as a base for future equipment for direct manufacturing of functional micro components.

Approach and implementation

Project has been in close cooperation with Digital Metal - manufacturer of 3DP equipment, Höganäs - powder supplier with extensive market knowledge and Sensic - an end-user can set functional requirements and evaluate the final results. The end result of the project was to build a demonstrator of a future application area: electronics packaging for chemical gas sensors to be placed in harsh environments and withstand high temperatures.
