PIMM DMA - Pilot for Industrial Mobile communication in Mining Digitalized Mining Arena

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - RISE SICS AB, Kista
Funding from Vinnova SEK 8 900 000
Project duration July 2017 - June 2019
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

PIMM DMA aimed to * Bring the innovative ideas and funding from the PIMM project to a maturity level where industrialization can start and business relations can be initiated. * Further build understanding of how to specify services level agreements between involved suppliers and users, in new value networks. * Increase knowledge of solutions for localized core network, supervision and control of various machinery, connected sensors and distributed control center to empower mining operators, all enabled by mobile network connectivity.

Expected results and effects

Industrialization of several of the solutions has now started. We see 5G being launched for industrial applications and part of this is based on experiences from PIMM DMA. We expect: *Long term effects through the impact from PIMM DMA had on productivity and safety in mining *New products and services within telecom, automation and machinery. *Lower energy consumption and environmental impact as a consequence of more control and supervision of processes and equipment.

Planned approach and implementation

PIMM DMA was successfully built upon cooperation and trust between companies, authorities and individuals. The project has been executed in a lean agile scrum-of-scrum setup which has been very essential for being able to take care of and act upon all new innovative ideas occurring during the execution. The involved companies has executed the major part of all the work that has been done - which is another important factor for why this project has been so successful. Knowledge transfer is built in to the whole setup - and the "valley of death" in innovation is bridged.
