Photonics - an enabling technology for Sweden

Reference number
Coordinator EKONOMISKA FÖRENINGEN PHOTONICSWEDEN
Funding from Vinnova SEK 200 000
Project duration August 2012 - March 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim is to create a strategic innovation and research agenda to contribute through optics and photonics to a viable, expanding and profitable Swedish industry. The goal during this first phase was to develop a common agenda along with six other electronics-oriented agendas. The project´s goals are only partially met. The ambition level has been as high since the beginning, but the project has not progressed as planned. The current situation has been studied extensively, but both the editing of the agenda and the development of the action plan were only started at the end of the project.

Results and expected effects

First, we have established a strong and comprehensive cooperation between PhotonicSweden, Swedish Electronics, Acreo, KTH, Chalmers and LTU, and at a later stage with Swednanotech. Then, the current status of our area was thoroughly studied and the agenda was started to be edited. From being somewhat neglected at the beginning of the project, we have managed to highlight an area that enables a substantial part of the Swedish industry. Our group and our area have in our view a clear potential to become an SIO. The impact could be further increased by including nanotechnology.

Approach and implementation

Acreo has led the common agenda. The definition of the collaboration has required long discussions in the beginning, but the results are now very satisfactory. The current situation has been studied in the form of a macro-economic study (outsourced to the company Grufman and Reje), over 40 company interviews and a web enquiry. Each agenda has also come up with a lot of information. Two workshops have been organized to generate new ideas and broadly share opinions and findings. The action plan has started to be developed and the agenda editing was started.
