Open data in education

Reference number
Coordinator Göteborgsregionens kommunalförbund
Funding from Vinnova SEK 720 000
Project duration December 2012 - November 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to investigate in what way you can and should give access to open data concerning students. Another aim of the project was to visualise the process in which data layers are created and made open and spread to additional stakeholders. Through the project rules for the creation of the data layer have been made and definitions as well as descriptions of classified information has been documented. Furthermore an initiative was taken during the project to also initiate a national discussion.

Results and expected effects

The project has been presented to the members of the local authorities of GR and it has also been communicated to other municipalities to spread the experience made by GR. Through the link between the national project financed by ESF; pluginnovation.se there were effects of synergy and possibilities of future dissemination to the 55 part taking councils.

Approach and implementation

The start of the project included mapping and systemising of available data. Thereafter the data was included in a data layer for testing. When the data was validated an external data layer was created as well as API:s for the access of a broader target group. The approach suited the project well, but the creation of the data layer took a reasonable amount of time that was not apprehended. It has been complicated to validate data that has lead to difficulties in creating the logic. In further projects this is knowledge worth bringing along.
