Open data for education

Reference number
Coordinator GOOD MEASURE AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 50 000
Project duration April 2015 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to inform teachers about open data and how it can be used as part of their teaching. Open data can be related to many different subjects. The project material is available (in Swedish) on the blog oppnadataiskolan.se, where 16 blog posts have been published. These posts have been about, among other things, open data in general, about visualization, and how these types of activities can be related to the syllabus. The blog posts have been spread by Twitter and Facebook. At the end of the project a short PDF about the project was made to spread to teachers and schools.

Results and expected effects

Project summary (in Swedish) http://oppnadataiskolan.se/2015/12/projektsummering/. The project hoped to reach teachers, where the benefit of using open data are increased understanding for the world around us, for the data that society collects, and increased understanding of data and statistics. No measurement has been made of to what extent the blog´s readers are connected to schools. The project is as a first step towards using open data in teaching. The next step is to more actively work with teachers, which was difficult before a basic information material was collected.

Approach and implementation

The benefit of the blog as a communication material is that the content can grow over time and can be spread in a more granular matter. Too little time was allocated to the spreading of blog content via social media and other means.
