Important results from the project
The project´s aim has been to rebuild three preschool units in the city of Västerås, and based on this work the goal has been to develop pieces of advice (called ´tips´ in publication) for how municipalities and independent preschools can build and rebuild preschools so that the indoor environment effectively promotes and supports children´s inclusive play and learning. These objectives have been achieved in addition to two units participating, and an additional target has been achieved in the form of newly designed and newly produced furniture for constraining norm-free play.
Expected long term effects
In the project´s initial phase a provotype of the excluding, norm-filled preschool was created. Interactive follow-up research of the preschools was conducted and provided valuable results on changed play patterns and inclusion in the children´s group, which became visible through analysis. The project has resulted in increased participation of children in the participating preschool units. The city of Västerås has been continuously involved in the project.
Approach and implementation
Two preschool units in the city of Västerås participated in the project. The first year consisted of scrutinizing the preschool´s needs and establishing the project and implementing WP1. Rebuilding was carried out (WP 2) in autumn 2017. Here we made an incorrect assessment of the time in the initial phase, which thus took longer than expected due to time needed for feedback and establishing contacts. The interactive research was carried out according to plan (WP 3). 2019 was devoted to the processing of material, analyzes, development of tips and dissemination of results.
