Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Purpose and goal

Documented knowledge of products´ geometric properties such as geometry deviations are important for producers and customers. With a straightness meter, customers receive a verified product that meets their eligibility requirements. For the producer, new opportunities for process optimization are created. At present, models for pipe direction are completely lacking because very limited research has been done in the area. With a straightness meter, this work is significantly facilitated by direct feedback of the straightness of the tube during the straightening process.

Expected results and effects

In the project, we have developed a straightness meter with a simple method, which provides non-contact, compact and portable measurement. No separate measuring station is needed. Participating companies Alleima, Ovako and SSAB have been given the opportunity to use the results implement online detection of pipes, which is of great industrial benefit, as it will lead to better exchange, reduced disposals and ensure that the product meets the requirement. Measuring, visualizing and documenting straightness also creates increased process knowledge thought the whole process.

Planned approach and implementation

In the project, we have designed, built and programmed a measurement system for straightness measurement based on industry specifications. The device has been tested in industrial environment at each company. The project has highlighted the challenges with a non-contact measuring system. Problems and suggestions for solutions that have arisen during the industrial experiments have been prepared jointly between the project participants. There are remaining challenges with the device. Increased laser power would increase robustness and have a positive effect on accuracy.
