Nanotechnology for sustainable development

Reference number
Coordinator SWEDNANOTECH AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration August 2012 - March 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Nanotechnology has the inherent potential to be part of the solution to many of the global societal challenges. Provided that safety aspects are timely handled, energy and environment will be clear winners in the use of nanotechnology, but also sustainable cities and demographic change are areas where nanotechnology can provide solutions. In 2023, we aim for a society where nanotechnology is integrated into products for a better, lighter, stronger and safer everyday life. Sweden is a key driver in the international development of good regulations and safe handling of nanotechnology.

Results and expected effects

Over ten years and through a number of measures, we will create an infrastructure which covers education, research, and commercialization of nanotechnology .The effects can be evaluated in terms of research funding, patents, publications, investment and jobs. By dissemination of nanotechnology knowledge from academia to industry and municipalities, thereby enhancing the ´reciever competence´, the commercial development has a better chance to take off. To create a user acceptance, the implicit values of nanotechnology have to soundly rely on a safe deployment of nanotechnology

Approach and implementation

The agenda has been developed in a collaboration between the Swedish major industry, development companies, research institutes, universities and NGOs, with SwedNanoTech as coordinator. The agenda has accomplished through national and international workshops, analysis of public research financing statistics, patent information and interviews with representatives from companies, research institutes, universities (students and researchers), and municipal operations.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
