Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to find characterization tools to judge the processability of a new material (such as CNT (Carbon Nano Tube) reinforced prepreg). Both the work undertaken in the field producibility of CNT reinforced prepreg and the forming mechanisms of multi-stacked prepreg has resulted in research that were previously unknown and a more reliable method for predicting how well the new materials will behave during the manufacturing process.
Expected long term effects
As a result of this project, methods have been developed to evaluate the potential and the applicability of new prepreg composites at a very early stage. By early establish knowledge about specific manufacturing and material technical characteristics for a new material, the technical and economic risks could be reduced when such materials introduced into commercial components. The lead times for the introduction of a new material should be shortened as a result of the findings.
Approach and implementation
In the project´s initial phase, the focus shifted towards to verify and further develop methods to characterize the processability of impact modified composites methods have since partially applied to a CNT reinforced prepreg material during the project´s final phase. Efforts to fabricate and characterize the properties of a CNT reinforced composite material have also been carried out during the project.
