Multi-Layer Waveguide Integration Platform for Future Millimeter-wave Systems

Reference number
Coordinator CHALMERS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLA AKTIEBOLAG - Institutionen för mikroteknologi och nanovetenskap
Funding from Vinnova SEK 400 000
Project duration November 2018 - May 2019
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme Electronic Components and Systems:
Call Electronic Components and Systems. Research and innovation feasibility studies 2018.

Purpose and goal

The goal of the pre-study is to verify two aspects of the MLW technology: Manufacturability and Ease of integration, which were both successfully achieved. Manufacturability was verified by using passive Bandpass Filters based on the MLW technology, while ease of integration was verified by focusing on integrating active MMICs. Specifications were provided by industrial partners and testing was performed at the “National THz Laboratory” at Chalmers.

Expected results and effects

The pre-study successfully verified the MLW technology as a viable component solution and integrated platform, as well as led to the development of key manufacturing know-how. The results were crucial in convincing partners of the potential of the technology and to contribute to further development. The results were also important in attracting new partners which led to a new Smartare Elektroniksystem Forsknings- och innovationsprojekt (FoI) application.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was run very efficiently. We had eight general meetings between partners. The pre-study was divided into four working packages. WP1 focused on specifications which was good to ensure all partners were in agreement on the goals. WP2 and WP3 focused on verification activities. WP4 focused on formulating a plan for further development of the technology, which was important as it allowed time to find the right partners to further strengthen the consortium for the FoI.
