Monitoring of tools with a new measurement technology

Reference number
Coordinator Kvarnstrands Verktyg AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 840 800
Project duration December 2011 - May 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose with the project is to develop a totally new product for the wooden industry. The new product is a monitoring system for the wooden industry to monitor the tools during production. The system includes wireless sensors integrated into the rotating tools. The system prevents breakdown and production stops which typical cost 40-150 tSEK per stop. The secondary benefits are; reduced service, better quality on production and longer tool lifetime.

Results and expected effects

The product, in its final embodiment, has been validated at the end customer, with very good result. Kvarnstrands plan to launce the product on the market autumn 2013.

Approach and implementation

The new monitoring system, including miniaturised wireless sensors, has been developed in cooperation with Novosense AB and Lund Institute of Technology (LTH). Kvarnstrands has been head party for testing, verification and validation. Novosense has been responsible for development of the miniaturised wireless sensors together with receiver and software. LTH has been responsible for the development of the monitoring concept and to further investigate the effect of monitoring of vibration and acceleration on the quality of production.
