Important results from the project
In this project we have studied the effect of dust on LIDAR detection. Experimental measurements show that the backscattered signal intensity is subject to the dust configuration and position. Based on the analysis of experimental data and available literature, a simulation model has been developed that considers the dust cloud volume, particles size and density. While the model simulates a static cloud, it can simulate target reflectivity and energy attenuation. In addition, the model estimates the backscatter intensity from dust particles.
Expected long term effects
The project has developed new simulation software for estimating the effect of dust clouds on lidar detections and verified the results by comparison with measurements. The software has been developed as a standalone tool with a dedicated user guide.
Approach and implementation
The project has been conducted according to the plan, with ESI as main responsible for project management and software development and VOLVO responsible for experimental measurements and hardware expertise. Due the current situation the planned physical meetings have been canceled but with mitigation through digital solutions the impact has been negligible,
