Methods to minimize drawbacks and environmental pollution caused by diffuse particle emissions in metal production

Reference number
Coordinator Swerim AB - Processintegration-PI
Funding from Vinnova SEK 900 000
Project duration December 2018 - March 2020
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Purpose and goal

The companies´ experiences regarding dust sources and mitigating measures have been shared within the project group. The developed Guide to dust reducing measures has been presented at an open seminar in conjunction with the Metallic Materials Program Conference. The companies have gained new knowledge on how they can reduce their diffuse particle emissions. Knowledge gaps and development needs has been identified and ideas about future work initiatives by individual companies or in collaboration between several companies and research organizations have been suggested.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in a confidential report for the participating companies as well as an official Guide to dust reducing measures that have had good publicity. The report and Guide describe diffuse dust emission, which dust sources and external factors that give problems and mitigating measures suitable for different types of dust problems. Measurement methods and calculations that can be used for quantification of the diffuse emissions are also described. Results from the project can lead to improved work environment, environmental performance, and sustainability.

Planned approach and implementation

The companies have answered a questionnaire about their work concerning diffuse dust emissions. IVL and Swerim have also visited and interviewed some of the participating companies and conducted a literature study. Based on this, common discussions in the project team were held to get an idea of the companies’ dust emission problems and what measures that they are taking. This has been a good way to gather knowledge and experiences when it comes to diffuse dust emissions and it has for instance resulted in an openly published Guide that can be used by all businesses with dust problems.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
