Massproduction of Synthetic Paper - the diagnostic material of the future

Purpose and goal

Synthetic Paper is a new porous material with well-defined micro geometries and specific surface properties. The material was developed at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the company Mercene Labs, specifically for medical diagnostic applications. This project has involved technical development, production scale-up, performance tests, and new collaborators. Mercene Labs are now offer custom materials and solutions based on the Synthetic Paper to its customers.

Expected results and effects

The long-term goal is to realize the material in tests for point-of-care diagnostics, and thereby contribute to more cost-effective healthcare with focus on patient safety. This project has made several important steps towards this long-term goal.

Planned approach and implementation

Mercene Labs, the company behind the Synthetic Paper, has led the work in this project. The material has been tested together with two international partners, with more collaborators joining during the course of the project. Mercene Labs also got industrial investors during the project.
