Important results from the project
Security through inclusion supports and guides young people in socially deprived areas, and we make them a part of society. The approach consists of employee-hosts who create relationships with the local population (focusing on young adults) with the aim to influence other youths they encounter in a positive direction. The idea of recruiting hosts who are close to the target audience is two-fold. Partly to give the hosts a chance to break their own isolation (the integration aspect) and partly to show the target group that it is possible to break their alienation.
Expected long term effects
The method contributes to long-term positive ripple effects for societal change. Youth in our program and operations, who already are role-models, retain their social status in a constructive context. The effect is contagious and the result is that friends and siblings who see this follow in the same footsteps. The so-called tail is affected, which creates conditions for long-term influence, with constantly new cohorts. The more young people who are included, the greater the spread. We see this as a key-factor for greater impact when decreasing civil unrest, securing neighborhoods.
Approach and implementation
We have emphasised on developing procedures regarding the recruitment of hosts and leaders, seeing it is the most crucial part of the method. With the help of focus groups and reference persons, internally and externally, we have developed a profile based on the following guiding principles: Relationships, mandates, relevant experience and tacit knowledge (street smarts). In October, we began the recruitment of young people and held a training session. Mapping of needs and building the target group and stakeholder network began in August, continuing throughout the project.
