Investigation of noobed material for aerospace applications

Reference number
Coordinator RISE SICOMP AB - RISE SICOMP AB, Linköping
Funding from Vinnova SEK 125 000
Project duration December 2018 - September 2019
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose and aim of the project is to investigate the use of noobed material in the aerospace industry from both a material property perspective and an economic perspective. Noobed material is a fiber reinforced composite consisting of a 3D textile of e.g. carbon fiber and a polymer.

Expected results and effects

A bracket that is today in aluminum was selected as a study object. Topology optimization was used to find a possible shape for a new bracket with noobed material. The resulting bracket is about 25% lighter than today´s bracket and can be manufactured in series for SEK 8000-10000 each. The big advantage of the material change is to use composite brackets in composite structures to avoid the problems associated with different thermal expansion between composite and metal components.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was led by RISE SICOMP who performed the topology optimization analyzes that resulted in concept bracket made of noobed material. Fureho performed a feasibility and cost analysis of the proposed bracket.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
