Investigation of alternative grain dryer heating.

Reference number
Coordinator AKTIEBOLAGET AKRON-MASKINER
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration April 2013 - January 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the pre-study was to analyze the possibilities to reduce oil dependence in the agricultural sector. The target was the grain drying, one of the largest energy consumers. Technical solutions have been viewed in two steps. The first step was to investigate the possibilities to make current dryers more energy efficient by reducing heat losses and improve dryer efficiency. The second step was to generate solutions to completely remove oil as source of energy for the grain dryer. The target was to present one or more concepts that could be realized in a demonstration facility.

Results and expected effects

The pre-study shows a large possibility to reduce the total energy consumption and at the same time leave oil as the primary energy source for grain drying. It is possible to make the drying process more efficient by optimizing flows of grain and drying air. There is also a large potential to further develop the process of heat recovery. Depending on the actual circumstances at the farm, the heating system can be customized by selecting the appropriate fuel and technique. The study has resulted in a suggested demonstration facility where the concepts can be realized and further developed.

Approach and implementation

The pre-study has been conducted according to the project plan. Available techniques as well as current research have been analyzed. The project parties have had regular meetings and participated at seminars and conferences dealing with the subject.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
