Reference number
Coordinator RISE SWECAST - Swerea SWECAST AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 260 000
Project duration April 2019 - December 2019
Status Completed
Venture Strengthening Sweden’s role in international standardization
Call Standardization in order to gain access to new markets

Purpose and goal

The objective is to accelerate the use of standards and standardization for ID tagging, digital tracking and data exchange on materials, to promote innovation in material-based circular economy and to decouple economic growth from increased use of resources. The project has described what the Internet of Materials (IoM) means, which standards can be used and which are missing. The project can summarize that IoM seems to be an area is relevant to standardization, that there are stakeholders for such work and that it seems feasible and globally relevant.

Expected results and effects

Early utilization of open standards for labeling and traceability can streamline the material and data flows of the circular economy and provide opportunities for innovation and business. Procurement and development of traceability technology can create practical application within and between the materials value chains. The survey opens up new efficient application of existing standards and focused development of new standards. The project results can form the core of a Swedish stakeholder network around IoM, for expertise and representation in industrial standardization.

Planned approach and implementation

The concept was discussed in detail (Koncept IoM) to obtain mutual understanding between the representative at RISE and SIS. SIS held a few small concept-focused meetings / workshops, to find relevant technical committees. In parallel Existing / Missing standards were mapped. The end seminar was attended by participants from industry and institutes, and the concept of IoM and the mapping work were presented and discussed. The discussions indicated a great interest in developing solutions and standardization in the area.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
