Project duration April 2014 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The main purpose of the project is to develop a unique manually driven geared wheelchair wheel designed for muscular impaired users. The systems should also fit different wheelchair models on the market. The result of the project is a stand-alone mechanically geared wheelchair wheel designed for a variation of wheelchairs. The solution with different gears creates opportunities to navigate in environments that could be perceived like more challenging.

Expected results and effects

The result of the project is a product that is better than what we could have foreseen based on technical, economical and end user perspectives. Despite huge technical challenges, where little details impact on the target group has to be considered, we have managed to develop a product that gives the end user new opportunities and service people a user-friendlier product.

Planned approach and implementation

The structure has been one of the keys for a successful implementation of the project. We have had four main areas: The concept, a technical model, analysis together with end users and optimisation. Despite technical challenges and decisions, one important part has been end user dialogs, especially when it comes to the design of details and technical solutions. The focus on the main goal of the project has been very important when different solutions and decisions are compared to each other´s.
