Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach for Superalloys

Reference number
Coordinator Swerea KIMAB AB - Swerea KIMAB AB, Kista
Funding from Vinnova SEK 761 760
Project duration July 2017 - February 2018
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Important results from the project

The idea behind the initiative has been fulfilled and calculations carried out can with good accuracy reproduce results from metallography made available as also to literature surveyed. As a pre-study with limited resources a lot has been achieved with calculations on homogenization heat treatments, coarsening of gamma prime and database precision. Still substantial work remains when connecting microstructure to properties.

Expected long term effects

As an initiative the project has successfully highlighted the possibilities with ICME, CALPHAD and superalloys applied on a number of specific technical issues and from a broader didactic perspective. The last mentioned is important since experience and knowledge about all project components was limited and there is now a better knowledge and confidence which are important prerequisites for a full scale application.

Approach and implementation

The initiative and emerging pre-study has been run by a project committee with representatives from the participating companies and connected to a steering committee from Jernkontoret, the Swedish steel producers´ association. A total of eight project meetings were held, start at 28th of August 2017 and final at 26th of March 2018, with Magnus Hasselqvist from Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery as chairman. The realization was successful in that available knowledge was utilised and confidence to share internal results has been created.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
