Project duration September 2014 - August 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project has been to develop new types of biomaterial based solutions to biofilm induced infections on medical devices. The focus has also been on transforming Dr. Svenson into a competent research leader in the field of biomaterials and medical device technology. Both the scientific and the personal development aspects of the project have followed the project and development plan and Dr. Svenson has submitted an application as associate professor to the Linneus university.

Expected results and effects

The research carried out in the project have led to an increased insight in how to modify cationic antimicrobial peptides to steer the antimicrobial activity. The further professional development of Dr. Svenson has turned him into a competent research leader capable of intiating and leading international projects. It is anticipated that this will yield new international projects in the future aimed at reducing the occurrence of biofilm associated infections on medical devices.

Planned approach and implementation

The majority of the work has been performed at SP. That work involves material studies and biological evaluations of compounds and prepared materials. The synthesis of cationic peptidomimetics has been performed at UiT The Arctic Univ. of Norway in a collaborative effort. The collaboration between SP and UiT have worked well after an initial delay in peptide supply due to staff reorganization at UiT. Collaborations with the Linnéus University and the University of Auckland were also initiated.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
