Industrialisation of Additive Manufacturing through multi-purpose post-PRocEssing

Reference number
Coordinator Mittuniversitetet - Mittuniversitetet Östersund
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 880 804
Project duration June 2018 - March 2022
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material

Purpose and goal

The project aimed to address challenges in post-processing of additively manufactured materials by evaluating an electrochemical method (RENA Technologies GmbH, Austria) with the aim of reducing material use and costs and demonstrating increased product performance. More than 450 details in four different alloys have been manufactured and evaluated and the demonstrators show that the technology can reduce product weight and costs for finishing and that it works for most different types of geometries, even if there are limitations.

Expected results and effects

The project has generated new collaborations with a number of side projects financed by the partners where specific projects have been carried out and the post-processing equipment has been purchased for a Swedish application center for additive manufacturing. The project has generated new knowledge in design for post-processing and we have through the project increased the general knowledge about additive manufacturing and post-processing among the participating companies. A network has been formed that can lead to future research projects and business constellations.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was carried out within the framework of six work packages where the working method during the project was adapted due to the ongoing pandemic, which also led to the project being extended. In the final evaluation of the project´s implementation, more physical meetings were highlighted and another challenge was the logistics around all manufactured details. Otherwise, the project worked very well.
