Project duration November 2020 - December 2022
Status Completed
Venture Circular and biobased economy

Important results from the project

The goal of the project has been to introduce a new system for handling biofuel ash. The system is based on using ash in a biogas filter that upgrades raw biogas to vehicle fuel. After the ash has been used in the filter, it is well suited for being returned and spread to forest land. In this way, important cycles of minerals and nutrients are completed. The ash system has hereby double environmental benefits at the same time as it contributes to an improved economy within forestry and biogas industry. After completing the project, we can state that the aim and objectives have been achieved.

Expected long term effects

The project has led to increased knowledge in ash filter technology as well as storage and spreading of bio fuel ash. Furthermore, the work finding geographical areas where the concept can be implemented has brought together important companies that are needed for getting the system to work. There has been a major interest in the system and we believe that new ash filter facilities will be built. In order for the system to take off, it is critical to get some pioneers to step in and invest in this technology. This project has been important in setting the stage for new pioneering facilities.

Approach and implementation

A lot of work in the project has been put into bringing together people from different industries within ash, biogas and forestry. This has been successful but remains one of the biggest challenges for the concept. The project approach has been good despite some complications. Due to delays in the construction of the physical ash filter plant the schedule could not be kept. Trials and demonstrations have had to be moved to the later part of the project. Through hard work during the summer and autumn of 2022, we have managed to make up for all lost time and have reached our goals with good results.
