Important results from the project
The project has aimed to meet the industrial challenges in improving the slag formation process and the quality of the final slag. The following sub-goals have been included and achieved; 1) to clarify what the initial slag formation process in LD-processen looks like and how this process could be optimized 2) to develop a lime-containing booster briquette that enables a quick lime dissolution and thereby a good phosphorus purification early in the process 3) to develop a sampling equipment that makes it possible to take samples during full-scale operation.
Expected long term effects
The project has contributed to the development of new products and knowledge which, when applied during the initial slag formation process in the LD process, can have a major impact on the final products, steel and slag. The project will in the long run strengthen the Swedish metal industry´s competitiveness through increased understanding of slag formation as well as reduced costs and environmental impact. In parallel with research activities conducted at LTU and Swerim, successful full-scale experiments with a unique slag sampler have been carried out at SSAB.
Approach and implementation
In the project, two research performers (Luleå University of Technology and Swerim AB) together with three industry parties (SSAB, Mekinor, SMA), all with well-defined but different competencies, worked towards a common project goal, an increased understanding of the initial slag formation process in the LD process. In the multidisciplinary approach, conditions have been created for synergies, including in the form of broad process knowledge, and through active participation, the project has been able to be carried out flawlessly.
