Important results from the project
The goal of Hero-m 2i is summarized in its vision “The hierarchic approach (ICME) for design of materials, components and structures has become a widespread enabling technology used by companies to enhance competitiveness and increase the business value of customer offer. The Hero-m 2i approach is a game changer that contributes to the circular economy and a sustainable society.” The research within Hero-m 2i has focused on development of tools and methods that has been applied in Materials design projects in close collaboration with industrial partners to fulfill the vision.
Expected long term effects
The Hero-m 2i centre was a large success, both from an academic perspective as well as from an industrial. For instance, within Hero-m 2i around 90 papers have been published in prestigious scientific journals; 20 PhDs have graduated, all graduated PhDs have been very attractive for jobs in academia and industry; knowledge vital for innovations has been generated. It was largely thanks to Hero-m 2i that Centre for Mechanics and Materials Design at KTH was launched in 2020 with several partners from Hero-m 2i.
Approach and implementation
The work within Hero-m 2i stemmed from ICME, Materials Genome and Computational Materials design and the goal has been to enable faster development of new materials for new applications. The research has ranged from important industrial materials with improvement potential, e.g. steel and cemented carbide, to future materials e.g. amorphous steels. The research involved fundamental topics of strategic value as well as more applied topics. The main emphasis was on new theoretical predictive tools but experimental verification and measurements played an essential role.
