Reference number
Coordinator Swerim AB - Avdelningen för Värmning och Bearbetningsteknik (VB)
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 039 600
Project duration July 2017 - March 2019
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

The basis for a prototype system for optimized grinding has been laid. The project has verified the methodology to optimize the process. Evaluation of changed machine settings has been calculated to give an improvement of the life of the grinding wheels by + 12%. The work has shown a way to simultaneously optimize a larger part of the process than was previously possible. A basis has been developed by Swerim for alternative methods to measure the grinding wheel diameter.

Expected results and effects

Evaluation of changed machine settings has been calculated to give an improvement of the life of the grinding wheels by + 12%. Steel grades have been identified where these changes have good possibilities to give desired improvements. These improvements are mainly improved material yield and reduced abrasive wear. Continued work could also achieve smoother surface properties, reduced wear on machine components and increased productivity.

Planned approach and implementation

The optimization logic has been verified through multivariate tools and the result / effect has been manually verified. The logic requires that the grinding wheel wear is measured with an accuracy of +/- 0.5 mm and the removed amount of material is measured with an accuracy of +/- 25 kg. As this accuracy was not achieved, the layout had to be changed to measure grinding wheel wear in relation to ground surface area.
