Important results from the project
The aim has been to develop a green sustainable paper bottle for the food industry based on straw from wheat and barley, replace plastic bottles and achieve a lower carbon footprint, especially for beer packaging, whereby the by-product straw from beer production with wheat and barley is utilized for packaging. The unique technology at Paboco for the production of paper bottles has been implemented with Carlsberg paper bottle design and the use of a newly developed cellulose raw material based on straw from FiberX and DTI.
Expected long term effects
We have succeeded in developing an alternative concept for the production of straw cellulose from wheat and barley, as a raw material in a unique sustainable paper bottle meeting requirements for use in beer packaging. The project is a collaboration between FiberX, Paboco, Carlsberg and DTI. Improved properties have been obtained in terms of strength, stiffness and density, eg the strength is improved up to 50% compared to wood cellulose reference typically used. Fullscale trials at Paboco have been carried out without any problems, and have achieved acceptance from end user Carlsberg
Approach and implementation
Implementing the results with Green Straw Bottle is realistic, as straw is a great resource. This presupposes that a production of the newly developed pulp is established. and upscaling in Paboco`s production as well as that demand from end users is growing. As one of the end users like Carlsberg, a green straw paper bottle will be able to be branded due to its sustainability. In addition, there are opportunities to apply the concept to other applications. The green climate change will be a driver for the development of sustainable packaging solutions based on straw.
