Project duration August 2012 - December 2014
Status Completed

Important results from the project

In GOTRIS an ITS platform will be developed in which information sources from different organizations will be integrated. By bringing together all the actors and letting the railway, shipping and road traffic share information and services in a RIS for the river Göta Älv, the project will demonstrate how navigation on Lake Vänern and Göta Älv can be managed for passages of bridges and locks to reduce disruption to road traffic and rail transport while optimising vessel traffic.

Expected long term effects

Results and expected effects: Demonstrated in a real environment how ITS can be used to manage more efficiently the modes of transport that compete for the same resource passage on and over the river Göta Älv. Produced decision data for managing common organisation, regulations and control principles for the traffic on and over the river Göta Älv. Developed models for forecasting travel and arrival times for vessel traffic on the river Göta Älv.

Approach and implementation

The project mainly consisted of a design and development phase, and an evaluation phase. During the first year, the platform was developed of material from the A-project, togehter with users and developers. The evaluation phase consisted of a validation part, where the system was tested by pilots in a simulation facility at Chalmers. Field test with real ships, pilots and dispatchers were then carried out over an 8-month pilot period. During the period, we also conducted comprehensive data logging, including interviews, on-board observations and surveys.
