Purpose and goal

Urbanisation is a global trend. To make space for more people in urban areas we need new, smart residential solutions where we re-use space and resources more efficiently. There are global initiatives for unique solutions for this, but no one creating affordable solutions. FlexRoom is a spare bedroom with storage included that saves 5 sqm living area and creates flexibility inside your home. Pressing a button you can open up and close the room when needed. This project aims at developing the solution for efficient production and market adaption.

Product development within the following areas: Design for manufacture Simplification of technical solution Electronics and software for resilience and easy service Simplification of design and user interface Simplifies handling and service Goal: Reduced production cost with 50-75% Result: 58-64% depending on volume

Planned approach and implementation

The Project has been a collaboration between Ikano Bostad and OIM/Lito. In an initial phase people from KTH Live-in-Lab, RISE and IKEA participated around concept and way forward. There was a decision on proceeding on one of the solutions - FlexRoom. From the choosen path the product has been developed on technical solution, electronics and design by OIM/Lito in close cooperation with Ikano Bostad. The process has been very positive with an open dialogue and great collaboration along the way. The result of the project has reached the target of the project.
