Purpose and goal
The purpose of the study was to create an integrated platform for laparascopic computer-assisted ablation of liver tumours. Firstly, laparoscopic components such as laparoscopic cameras, laparoscopic ultrasound and instruments were integrated into the CAS-ONE system. Secondly, ultrasound-based referencing of the organ to pre-operative image data to augmented reality-based visualization techniques was performed allowing the surgeon to view both the endoscopic video image, augmented with preoperative (i.e CT) and intra-operative (i.e. ultrasound) image data in one view.
Expected results and effects
Technology developments have been integrated into CAScination´s CAS-One Laparoscopy Device and CE marking was completed for an extended version of the device including hard- and software enhancements provided by the University of Bern. On November 1st, 2016 the navigated technology platform was successfully applied in a clinical setting (first-in-man). The partners plan to further validate technical safety and efficacy and subsequently to implement the study protocols that have been developed by the clinical partners within the CAMILIS project.
Planned approach and implementation
In parallel to the technological enhancements, the MAVERRIC multi-center clinical study is ongoing at 3 study sites. Dy the end of October 2016 29 patients had been included. The clinical team is planning to continue the study beyond the CAMILIS framework and expects completion of enrolment in 2017. The partners plan to further validate technical safety and efficacy and subsequently to implement the study protocols that have been developed by the clinical partners within the CAMILIS project.
