Purpose and goal
The project aimed to speed up the rate of development, for example by creating opportunities to introduce more AI. The aim has been to “enable data driven innovations within the forest industry, by establishing a data lab for the silvicultural digital chain”. Through the data lab, collaboration has been created and several parties has contributed with data driven innovations. AI and machine learning has been introduced in a broader spectrum and the rate of development has been accelerated by simplifying data preparation and establishing mutual methods, processes, and tools.
Expected results and effects
The data lab has compiled data from the whole value-chain, from the forest to the industries. Five applications with AI have been created to improve the competitiveness of the forest industry with regards to timber measurements. Conditions for a life-cycle management of existing AI-solutions has been created, where the models easily can be retrained. Several parties have, with the support of Biometria, tested applications in the open lab environment. Within the context of this project 3 master thesis, 3 bachelor’s thesis, 2 research articles and a work report has been written.
Planned approach and implementation
The project started from use cases that representatives from Biometria, Skogforsk, Mid Sweden University, SCA, Sveaskog, Sydved and Bron Innovation, mutually prioritized to test. An agile way of work has been used. Two innovation-sprints have been performed, unfortunately it has not been possible to arrange a hackathon. Continuously during the project, experience exchange has taken place with Skogsdatalabbet and Företagsdatalabbet. The data lab and its offering have also been presented more widely in the industry, to around 20 corporations, where there is a great interest.
