Project duration September 2018 - December 2021
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim is to develop methods and technologies to improve the efficiency of agriculture such that many might be engaged in sustainable agriculture via several ways as resource utilization, minimize the need for expert knowledge, increase the degree of automation. RISE Acreo has successfully developed and implemented sensors systems to give reliable and relevant information that are sent to the cloud and integrated with the AFarCloud middleware platform for data analysis to provide decision support for agriculture.

Expected results and effects

Successful development and field installation of wireless, real-time, multi-parameter soil sensor networks that are integrated in the AFarCloud platform allowed for i) development of a soil model for water and irrigation management, ii) partners develop algorithms for data analysis, data fusion (e.g. camera on drones, weather station) and decision support. Feasibility studies were also performed for pH sensor in cow’s rumen, soil nutrients, and energy harvesting for passive sensors.

Planned approach and implementation

RISE participated in all Work Packages, was leader for WP5 ‘Sensors and Actuators’, tasks T4.1 ‘Pre-processing, data fusion algorithm development’, T5.2 ‘Livestock welfare and environment monitoring sensor development for systems and legacy vehicles’, T5.4 ‘Sensor, actuator interface and network development’. The work was carried out in short (monthly consortium meetings) and fast iterations (weekly input exchange) to achieve the goals. The successful results show that is possible to provide a distributed platform for autonomous agriculture by using Cyberphysical System.
