E!7577 FREI Development of environmentally benign flame retardant wood fibres for building insulation products

Reference number
Coordinator SP SVERIGES TEKNISKA FORSKNINGSINSTITUT AB - SP Trä
Funding from Vinnova SEK 585 717
Project duration July 2013 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aims of the project were to evaluate a novel fire retardant treatment and apply it to a range of business cases using wood fibres by fulfilling the development of scalable methods for treatment, applying the treated fibres in prototype insulation products, and evaluating the reaction to fire, bio resistance and mechanical properties against current products. In addition, the suitability of the treated fibres as a renewable, sustainable material with a low carbon footprint was achieved.

Results and expected effects

Results obtained in the project showed the ease of treatment with the novel fire retardant, and how it could be implemented by the project partners. The treated fibres were manufactured into a range of prototype insulation products and subsequent testing showed excellent fire resistance of these products. Life cycle analysis showed the benefits to be gained when using environmental assessment methods for selecting materials of choice for future construction projects.

Approach and implementation

The project partners demonstrated the potential for manufacturing woodfibre-based products with enhanced fire performance and environmental credentials. This knowledge can either be used to expand current business opportunities or to work with new partners to expand the range of possible products.
